Chiefs Sign Former Raiders Cornerback David Amerson

David Amerson is on his way to Kansas. The Kansas City Chiefs did not waste any time in the offseason when it came to making roster changes as they traded quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins prior to the season ending with Super Bowl LII.

Over the weekend, the Chiefs continued making changes. They signed a free agent cornerback who makes their secondary better prior to free agency even really beginning.

The Chiefs signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback David Amerson, who was recently released by their AFC West rivals. The deal between the Chiefs and Amerson is for one year and worth as much as $6 million. One rumor had the base salary for Amerson at $2.25 million with the rest being incentives.

Amerson was picked in the second round by the Redskins. He played just over two seasons with the Redskins prior to being cut during September of 2015. He then signed with Oakland were his career was rejuvenated.

During June of 2016, Amerson signed an extension for four years and $38 million with close to $18 million guaranteed. However, he did not reach the completion of his extension as earlier in February, the Raiders released him so they could save cap space of $6 million.

During his NFL career, Amerson has played in 68 games, has eight interceptions, defended 64 passes, and made 218 tackles. This past season was cut short for Amerson after he sustained a foot injury.

Statistics show that over the past two seasons, of which 2017 was limited to six games due to injury, Amerson has not played that well.

However, at just 26, the cornerback still has much potential, which he showed during the 2015 season that helped him earn the four-year contract extension and included four interceptions.

Playing for the Chiefs he will be the No. 2 cornerback as the No. 1 spot is held by Marcus Peters. Kendall Fuller will likely play the slot and Eric Berry, who missed all of the 2017 season after rupturing his Achilles during Week 1, returns to play safety. The Chiefs should have strong coverage secondary.

The Chiefs will have a new look secondary compared to their 2017 roster, which for them will be good news. Four members of their secondary – safety Steven Terrell and cornerbacks Terrance Mitchell, Kenneth Acker and Phillip Gaines – will all be free agents during the offseason. Darrelle Revis a veteran cornerback has already been released.
