Colorado Aims for 10th Straight Win vs. Elon
There’s no doubt the No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes (9-1) are riding a major high after upsetting former No. 6 Kansas last Saturday, but they have a chance to climb even higher in the polls with a milestone win on Friday night at home against an unranked Elon Phoenix (5-4) team.
The Buffaloes will go for their 10th consecutive win tonight since dropping their season opener to Baylor. The 10-game win streak would be the longest the basketball program has seen in 52 years and would certainly further establish the Buffaloes as a true Pac-12 power this season.
“It’s nice for our university, the program and players that we are recognized as one of the elite teams in the country,” Colorado head coach Tad Boyle told the school’s official website, via ESPN.com. “But we aren’t going to get carried away with it. Just like we won’t be disappointed if we’re not in it.”
Meanwhile, the Phoenix will be looking to keep things rolling in a positive direction too, as they aim for their fourth straight win. With its six top scorers returning from last season, Elon is averaging more than 80 points per game. However, the school hasn’t defeated a top-25 opponent since the 1998-1999 season (0-17), which, coincidentally, is the last time it met with Colorado – a game the Buffaloes won handily 107-69.
This time around, Colorado is only a 13.5-point favorite and considering it has defeated four of its opponents by a larger margin this season, there’s a good chance Colorado could cover, especially at home, where it has won 15 consecutive games against non-conference foes.
Elon has only lost one game by more than 13 points this season, but the Phoenix haven’t played since Dec. 3 and their normally sharp shooters could be a bit rusty coming into tonight’s contest against a solid defensive team.
There’s little doubt that the Buffaloes will prevail for the 10th straight time this season tonight, but also expect them to cover -13.5 against the Phoenix in this one.
