Cut by the Browns, Brock Osweiler returns the Broncos

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Brock Osweiler has taken the lucrative scenic route back to the team that drafted him.

According to Mary Kay-Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Denver Broncos are set to sign Osweiler to be the direct backup to starting quarterback Trevor Siemian, pending a physical.

The team has yet to announce the signing or release their 53-man roster, which was due in to the league office by 4 p.m ET.

Osweiler will be the No. 2 QB behind Siemian with Paxton Lynch (shoulder) on the shelf and undrafted rookie Kyle Sloter no longer on the team (he was waived Saturday).

A second-round pick in 2012, Osweiler started seven games for Denver in 2015 before bolting to sign a massive free-agent deal with the Houston Texans. He was shipped to the Cleveland Browns earlier this offseason and released Friday.

The Broncos were seeking QB with experience in coordinator Mike McCoy’s offense. Osweiler fits the bill and likely only cost $775,000 in minimum salary, as the Browns are on the hook for $15.225 million in 2017.

Lynch will miss at least the first two regular-season games after suffering a shoulder sprain in the third preseason game against the Packers. Sloter could resurface on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
