Jadeveon Clowney Has Much to Prove Despite Getting His Wish

New Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney joins an already formidable defensive unit following his trade from the Houston Texans.

However, Jadeveon Clowney hasn’t quite made it yet. Amidst his dispute with the Texans and doubts about him as a player and person, Clowney must show his worth.

Jadeveon Clowney (26), had been holding out from Texans training camp, believing Houston should have offered him more money. The Texans did not want to slap the franchise tag on him before the July 15 deadline.

Clowney did have a $15.697 million offer on the table which he refused to sign, giving him the power. After weeks of trade rumours involving the Miami Dolphins, he eventually joined the Seahawks.

The three-time Pro Bowler will play alongside Bobby Wagner, Ziggy Ansah and Jarran Reed. That is a defense capable of going to the Super Bowl provided the Clowney trade works out for Seattle.

Ever since he was just a prospect, there were doubts around the league about his maturity. His dispute with the Texans won’t make that go away, although such things are commonplace in the NFL.

Clowney’s belief that he is worth a high wage packet will be put to the test this year. The 2014 No. 1 overall pick has 53 tackles for loss in his three years in the league, which ranks third behind Aaron Donald (57) and Chandler Jones (53).

However, his sacks and pressures are not elite. They are good, but not in the top three. Clowney will have to break into the top three in these actions to prove that he is a Super Bowl DE.

However, there is no doubting his talent. Even a Clowney at 85% of his potential is a potent weapon in a Super Bowl chase. It will be down to Pete Carroll and the Seahawks staff to get the best out of him in 2019.
