Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Joins The New York Jets

Right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif has joined the New York Jets after falling out of favor at the Kansas City Chiefs.

Laurent Duvernay-Tardif graduated from medical school two years ago, becoming the first active NFL player to practice as a doctor.

He was also the first player to opt out of the NFL last season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Laurent Duvernay Tardif instead opted to work at a clinic near Montreal to help people through the crisis.

“Being at the frontline during this offseason has given me a different perspective on this pandemic and the stress it puts on individuals and our healthcare system,” he said at the time.

“I cannot allow myself to potentially transmit the virus in our communities simply to play the sport that I love. If I am to take risks, I will do it caring for patients.”

Tardif (30), started 14 games on the way towards the Chiefs’ 2019 Super Bowl LIV victory. However, he hasn’t played a game since that Super Bowl.

He was available for the first time for the Chiefs VS Giants game on Sunday, but wasn’t selected. A hand injury sustained in training camp has seen him lose his place to rookie Trey Smith.

Tardif’s sacrifice saw him lose his position in a potential dynasty in Kansas. However in New York, he has an opportunity to start ahead of Greg Van Roten and rejuvenate his career.

“It’s an opportunity to add a Super Bowl champion to the room,” Jets general manager Joe Douglas said.

“You guys know how I feel about offensive and defensive linemen. If there’s an opportunity to improve those rooms, we’re going to do it. LDT brings that championship pedigree. A high-character person. Obviously, he’s a very smart guy. I can’t wait to get him in here and see him compete.”
