Lions Linebacker Trevor Bates Arrested in NYC

On Saturday, New York police said linebacker Trevor Bates with the Detroit Lions punched an officer in the face after he had been arrested.

Bates, who is 25, was booked at the Queens 115th Precinct station for the alleged non-payment of a $32 cab fare for a trip to the Hampton Inn in Queens from Manhattan said the District Attorney of Queens Richard Brown.

While at the station, Bates was told if he did not have any outstanding warrants, he would be given just a desk appearance ticket and could leave, said Brown. The DA said Bates refused to allow police to fingerprint him and became very agitated and punched a sergeant above the left eye.

The sergeant had to have three stitches to close the wound and was diagnosed with a concussion. Bates was subdued with a stun gun.

Bates is now facing one charge of assaulting a law enforcement officer which is a felony along with theft of service, obstructing government administration and resisting arrest.

In a prepared statement, Bob Quinn the general manager of the Lions said the team was aware of Trevor Bates’ arrest on Saturday in New York.

Quinn added that the team had not spoked to Bates and were still attempting to gather additional information. Quinn added that at this time not further comment would be made.

Bates is a backup linebacker and stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 247 pounds. He was taken by authorities to have a psychiatric evaluation at Elmhurst Hospital.

During his first season playing with Detroit, Bates played in nine games and had three tackles.
