Man Runs Over Wife After Gambling Fight
A man from the Boston suburb of Quincy has been charged with first-degree murder after running over his ex-wife in their driveway. It didn’t help that she was run over four times according to police.
Prosecutors charged Yan Long Chow with first-degree murder. Chow entered a not guilty plea in Norfolk Superior Court on Thursday.
Chow said it was an accident that happened after he became dizzy. The prosecution said it happened after the couple fought over Chow’s gambling losses. Chow and Zhen Li had married in China in 1985, but divorced in 1993. They remarried in 1998 and divorced again in 2005. But they still lived together after their second divorce.
Chow was not charged with murder until a grand jury returned an indictment on Wednesday. Chow entered his not guilty plea the following day. He is being held without bail. His attorney, Scott Martin, requested $50,000 cash bail and house confinement. He stated Chow knew the grand jury had convened and could have fled at that time, but did not. He also stated Chow would turn in his passport.
Court documents said Chow and Li argued frequently, often over his gambling losses. Li was planning to return to China by herself due to Chow’s gambling problems. She told her mother that he spent the two days before death in Boston gambling. The couple owned a Chinatown restaurant.
Chow called police on Sept. 2, 2016, at 2:26 p.m. to say he blacked out behind the wheel when arriving to pick up his wife. After realizing he had run her over, he told police that he back up the vehicle. After not seeing anything he told police he pulled forward before backing over Li yet again. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Judge Beverly Cannone denied bail for Yan Long Chow, who is scheduled to appear back in court on May 8.
