Mike Daniels Ruthlessly Cut by Packers

Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Mike Daniels has been suddenly cut from the team ahead of training camp.

Mike Daniels (30), has been a Packer for his entire NFL career. He played the last seven seasons in Green Bay after being drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 draft.

Now, Mike Daniels is being sacrificed for the future of the franchize.

After NFL.com initially reported it on Wednesday, the Packers made the news official with a statement.

“We want to thank Mike for his tremendous contributions on the field, in the locker room and in the community over the last seven seasons,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said.

“His incredible work ethic propelled him to be a standout player during his time in Green Bay. We wish Mike, his wife, Heaven, and their entire family all the best.”

Daniels made the 2017 Pro Bowl, and as such should have been easier to trade. However, Green Bay could’t find a partner. Their only choice in freeing up his 2019 salary of $8.1 million was to release the player.

Daniels compiled 29 sacks over his Packers career. As well as that, he generated 271 quarterback pressures. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he was optimistic about the team’s future despite losing Daniels’ experiences.

“I wish him well, but we feel really, really good about the group that we have,” Matt LaFleur said.

“You know with Kenny Clark, with [Tyler] Lancaster, [Dean] Lowry, Montravius Adams, [Kingsley] Keke. … We feel like we have a group in place that can get the job done.

“You always want to keep good players, but unfortunately that’s part of this business is there’s tough decisions that you have to make.”
