Mike Tomlin Extends Pittsburgh Steelers Contract Until 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers are committed to coach Mike Tomlin as the man to lead them through their upcoming transitional period.

The team announced Tuesday that Mike Tomlin signed a contract extension that runs until the end of the 2024 season.

It will extend Tomlin’s tenure as Pittsburgh’s head coach to seventeen years. The 49 year old is 145 – 78 – 1 since being hired in 2007. He is already ranked 21st in career wins in NFL.

Only two other coaches have began their careers with 14 non-losing seasons in a row. With the Steelers, Mike Tomlin has won one Super Bowl and been to another.

The Steelers have been to the playoffs nine times under Tomlin’s leadership. However, despite winning the AFC North in 2020, their postseason performance has waned in recent years.

They are 3 – 6 in the playoffs since 2011. As well as that, they have only made it past the divisional round once since winning the Super Bowl.

The 2020 season promises success for Pittsburgh, who won their first eleven regular season games. They ultimately finished 12 – 5, and suffered a blowout home loss to the Browns in the first round of the playoffs.

With questions over the future of Ben Rothelisberger, it was an awkward time in franchise history. In spite of that, owner Art Rooney II believes Tomlin is the man to take Pittsburgh forward, beyond the Big Ben era.

“Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League,” Rooney, the team president, said in a statement. “We are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we work to win another championship.”

“I am extremely grateful for this contract extension and want to thank Art Rooney II and everyone in the organization for the support in my first 14 seasons,” Tomlin said in a statement.

“We have a goal of winning the organization’s seventh Super Bowl championship, and I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about this upcoming season.”
