Minnesota Timberwolves Need Help in Free Agency
The NBA Draft has been completed and teams have already started to look at free agency. The Minnesota Timberwolves had a successful NBA draft and now face a number of tough decisions as free agency opens on July 1.
The biggest decision is the future of their star player Kevin Love. It is nearly 100% certain Love will opt out of his contract at the end of the 2014-14 season.
Therefore, the Timberwolves must either find some team to trade Love to and get something in return or watch him walk away and received nothing in return.
What happens with the Love saga will have a great deal of influence on how Minnesota attempts to complete its roster with news pieces that could help them return to the postseason.
The reserves need help in shooting after Alexey Shved and J.J. Barea had terrible seasons. Zach LaVine a rookie guard and Glenn Robinson III a pick in the second round could help remedy that problem, but they cannot step in from the start.
Minnesota also needs to strengthen its frontcourt with solid players who possess great athleticism. Dante Cunningham is currently a free agent and the other backups are not strong.
Minnesota is limited with its cap space, but with some wheeling and dealing could land solid players for the lineup.
Berea was a disappointment last season and a backup guard needs to be signed. LaVine could eventually be the backup point but with his lack of experience will delay him playing regularly. Ramon Sessions is an option. Sessions can attack well but has struggled at times shooting.
If the club wants a shooting specialist, they could opt for Mo Williams. He opted out of his contract at Portland and if he cannot renegotiate with the Trail Blazers, then Minnesota would be a good fit for him.
Williams could fit in well beside Ricky Rubio as the No. 2 guard as well.
The Timberwolves also need a power forward. With Love’s departure imminent, the other options on the time are not good, including Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.
He did not play that much this past season and has problems due to his size. He could be a better fit at No. 3 but at that position, the Timberwolves have enough players.
Possible players to pick up include Jordan Hill who is a strong rebounder and can shot well close to the hoop. Jeff Adrien is an option as well. He can rebound well and hit from mid-range in. He averaged more than 10 points per game after being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Even if Minnesota does not deal Love prior to the season, they would benefit if they were able to get a strong lineup around him.
However, the Timberwolves need to get something for Love and the longer they hold off the less they will get, as teams know they would be able to eventually sign him during free agency.
Possibilities exist with Golden State, Houston and Chicago for trade for Love that could help the rebuilding of the Timberwolves.
