NBA Free Agency: David West Agrees To Sign With San Antonio Spurs
The San Antonio Spurs struck gold when the landed the perhaps the best free agent available in All-Star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Veteran Tim Duncan will likely pass the torch to Aldridge in order to keep the franchise firing on all cylinders and contending for years to come, but their next major move took everyone by surprise with another solid option at power forward coming to town.
According to ESPN, San Antonio has agreed to terms with free agent forward David West:
The Spurs continued their run of good fortune Monday, luring free agent David West for what sources confirmed to ESPN’s Marc Stein’s will be the veterans minimum of about $1.5 million for next season.
With West letting it be known that he would not be returning to the Indiana Pacers and desired to play with a legitimate contender, the Spurs were in the running and had stiff competition. San Antonio is restricted in terms of how much they’d be able to pay West, but it seems it didn’t matter.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors also pursued West providing the opportunity to contend for a title. West was clearly more impressed with the allure of playing alongside two of the league’s best forwards in Aldridge and Duncan.
Adding West to an already drastically upgraded frontcourt makes San Antonio a strong title contender once again. The Spurs also agreed re-signed Danny Green this summer and will have both Duncan and Manu Ginobili back in the fold for at least one more season.
The bench in San Antonio may not be as good as it has been in years past, but the starting five may be as good as any in the league making them the Warriors’ toughest competition in the Western Conference.
