NBA News: Atlanta Hawks Plan To Sign Veteran Point Guard Jose Calderon
After spending the majority of the 2016-17 NBA season watching from the bench of the lowly Los Angeles Lakers, veteran point guard Jose Calderon was bought out of his contract and free to sign with another team.
Calderon, who wanted to play for a title contender, had an agreement in place with the Golden State Warriors to help bolster their backcourt. Unfortunately, right as Calderon was going to join the team, superstar Kevin Durant with an injury that forced the Warriors brass to address the void left at the small forward position resulting in the team needing to bring in Matt Barnes.
Now, after signing with the Warriors and promptly being waived, Calderon appears to have found another playoff-bound team in the Atlanta Hawks, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein:
The Atlanta Hawks plan to sign veteran point guard Jose Calderon ‎as early as Saturday, according to league sources.
Although Calderon’s chances of winning a title have dropped drastically going from the Warriors to the Hawks, the veteran will still have the opportunity to play in the playoffs while also adding over $400k to his bank account for the two hours he spent with Golden State.
As for the Warriors, the Western Conference heavyweights are hoping to hold onto their No. 1 seed while awaiting the return of Durant who will likely miss the rest of the regular season with the knee injury.
Calderon, however, will give the Hawks some insurance in the backcourt in Atlanta. The Hawks are currently sitting in the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards, and Toronto Raptors.
