NBA News: Ty Lawson Agrees To Sign With Indiana Pacers
After a failed stint with the Houston Rockets, veteran point guard Ty Lawson had his contract bought out making him a free agent. Although Lawson struggled in Houston, the 28-year-old was expected to draw interest from playoff contenders to help bolster their backcourts.
Fortunately for Lawson, the veteran didn’t stay a free agent for long. The Indiana Pacers came calling and have reportedly reached a deal with the North Carolina product, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical:
Free-agent guard Ty Lawson has agreed to a deal with the Indiana Pacers, league sources told The Vertical.
Heading toward the NBA trade deadline last month, the Pacers were aggressively pursuing a trade to upgrade the point guard position. Although George Hill has been a great floor general, the Pacers wanted to make a change and targeted Jeff Teague of the Atlanta Hawks.
Indiana came close to making the deal to acquire Teague in a swap for Hill, but the trade fell apart, and the deadline came and went. It appears the Pacers brass remained determined to bring in another point guard resulting in the signing of Lawson.
Despite the addition of Lawson, the Pacers might be back to square one this summer. Lawson’s deal is only for the rest of the season, and he’ll likely have to prove himself the rest of the way to merit being re-signed.
Lawson averaged 5.8 points and 3.4 assists per game in Houston before being bought out. Throughout the course of his seven-year NBA career, Lawson averaged 13.3 points and 6.2 assists per contest.
