Detroit Pistons coach breaks silence on Cade Cunningham’s status

The Detroit Pistons are set to be without star guard Cade Cunningham for at least one more week due to his recovery from a collapsed lung.

Cunningham is said to be progressing in his recovery, but the team announced before last Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves that he will be reevaluated in one week.

Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff voiced optimism toward the star guard’s recovery.

“It’s good to see him in good spirits,” Bickerstaff said via ESPN. “Good to see him moving around. It’s good to have him back around the group and at games and stuff like that, shootarounds because he brings a juice for our guys, but he’s progressing day by day, which is good.”

He’s putting together another highly productive campaign, averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 34.6 percent from beyond the arc.

In his absence, Detroit has found success, posting a 12-4 record this season.

He’s currently on pace to be one of eight players in NBA history to average that many points and assists in a season, and it would make him the first player to do so with the Pistons.

Cunningham is in danger of missing the 65-game threshold to be award eligible as he’s played in 61 games this season. The additional time for recovery is likely to make him fall short despite his massive role in leading the Pistons toward the best record in the Eastern Conference behind his MVP-caliber play.
