Kings star De’Aaron Fox wants trade to Spurs

The Sacramento Kings are bracing for a franchise-changing move after potentially opening availability of star point guard De’Aaron Fox ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

The one-time All-Star has reportedly expressed to the team that he is not interested in working out another long-term deal. Fox has one more year left in his five-year, $163 million max rookie extension that he inked back in November 2020.

He is set to hit the open market in the summer of 2026, leaving the Kings with the choice to move him before he leaves in free agency. Fox will have a high price tag given his talent and youth, but it’s believed that there will be plenty of teams inquiring about his services.

It’s believed that the San Antonio Spurs are his desired landing spot to pair himself alongside rising star big man Victor Wembanyama. Fox is looking to head to a situation where he can thrive while competing for an NBA championship.

Over the last couple of seasons, the Kings have taken significant steps forward, including reaching the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades.

However, things have headed south this season leading to the surprise firing of head coach Mike Brown after two-plus years at the helm. The Kings are in the 10th spot in the Western Conference standings at a 24-23 record but haven’t looked anything the part of a championship-contending team.

Fox is averaging a team-best 25.1 points along with 6.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 46.8 percent from the floor and 32.1 percent from beyond the arc.
