Knicks President Phil Jackson Has Reportedly Met With Frank Vogel
Over the past few weeks, a lot of coaching vacancies in the NBA have been taken. The Minnesota Timberwolves found their new head coach in Tom Thibodeau; Washington Wizards hired Scott Brooks, and the Los Angeles Lakers signed Luke Walton to a five-year contract.
While all of these notable coaching candidates found new jobs in the NBA, Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks remain without a head coach. Kurt Rambis was given the interim tag by the organization after Derek Fisher was fired, but the team has yet to commit to Rambis long-term.
Fortunately for Jackson and company, the Knicks have a great option available in Frank Vogel. The former Indiana Pacers head coach has surprisingly become available after the team decided not to sign him to a contract extension. Although the Knicks didn’t seem to jump at the opportunity to sign Vogel, Jackson has reportedly met with him, according to Ian Begley of ESPN:
New York Knicks president Phil Jackson met last week with former Pacers coach Frank Vogel, league sources have confirmed to ESPN.
All signs have pointed toward the Knicks simply retaining Rambis for at least one more year. Jackson and company seem to be in no hurry to secure the coaching position despite star forward Carmelo Anthony pleas for the team to right the ship as soon as possible.
Along with Vogel being a potential candidate for the Knicks, David Blatt, formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers, is also rumored to be a potential target for New York. Vogel may have jumped to the top of the list for the Knicks following his departure from Indiana, but Blatt seems like a real possibility, especially with Anthony recent endorsement.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out for the Knicks considering NBA free agency being right around the corner. New York would be wise to have a new head coach in place by that time before making pitches to free agents.
