Kyrie Irving intends to sign three-year extension with Mavs
The Dallas Mavericks have gone through some drastic changes recently, with the team trading superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
With the post-Doncic era underway, the team wants to build around Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and presumably Cooper Flagg. As part of this change, the Mavs will be extending Irving’s contract for the next three years, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
Dallas Mavericks All-Star guard Kyrie Irving is declining his $43 million player option and intends to sign a three-year, $119 million contract with the franchise, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
Mavericks officials and Irving’s agent, Shetellia Riley Irving, negotiated the new deal that keeps Irving out of free agency and in Dallas long term. The new deal includes a player option in the 2027-28 season, sources said.
Unfortunately for Irving, it remains uncertain when he’ll be able to get back on the floor for the Mavs as he is recovering from surgery on a torn ACL. However, Charania believes the team is targeting January.
Irving, 33, will sit out the start of the 2025-26 season but is hopeful to return as soon as January, sources told ESPN.
When Irving is healthy, the team’s new trio, along with Klay Thompson, could be a force to be reckoned with moving forward and a heavyweight in the Western Conference.

Only time will tell how things pan out for the Mavs as they head into this new era. The West will be tough once again next season, with the Oklahoma City Thunder coming off its first title and the Houston Rockets recently acquiring superstar Kevin Durant.
