NBA legend Julius Erving believes Nets ‘buying a championship’ like the Yankees

Throughout this season, the Brooklyn Nets have garnered a growing negative vibe.

Much of which centers on their star-studded roster that has seen notable players such as James Harden, Blake Griffin, and LaMarcus Aldridge join the fray. All that has pushed a critical narrative around the franchise due to their assortment of talent.

NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving certainly doesn’t sound like he’s a fan of the Nets’ roster assembly. During a recent interview on Danny Green’s “Inside the Green Room” podcast, Erving compared the Nets to the New York Yankees trying to buy a championship. “It’s reminiscent of how the Yankees used to do it all the time. They load up – they call it ‘buying a championship.’ The Lakers are known for doing that too.

“They’re getting all these pieces … they don’t know at the end of the season what it’s going to look like or what it’s going to feel like, but they’re going to be formidable. You’ve got a team with six former All-Stars, and three [All-NBA] guys who have been there and succeeded in the playoffs.”

Erving’s words lend an arm to what many of those around the game feel about the Nets. Their roster is stacked with plenty of proven talent that wouldn’t typically be together in any other circumstances.

Brooklyn benefited from Griffin and Aldridge each being bought out and available to join them on inexpensive deals. Meanwhile, they have had enough assets to move around to acquire Harden.

The criticism aside, the Brooklyn Nets know they can ultimately silence the doubters with their play on the court.
