NBA Rumors: Kings Ready To Let Rajon Rondo Leave In Free Agency?
The Sacramento Kings made an interesting move last summer signing one-time NBA champion Rajon Rondo to a one-year deal worth $9.5 million. Rondo wasn’t getting the kind of offers he had hoped for in NBA free agency after such a disappointing stint with the Dallas Mavericks and therefore was willing to take a discount to prove himself in Sacramento.
Although the Kings struggled once again during the 2015-16 NBA campaign, Rondo played extremely well and proved he may not be done as one of the elite point guards in the league. Unfortunately, despite his impressive play for the Kings, the team appears to be ready to move on, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe:
The latest scuttlebutt is that the Kings are prepared to cut bait with Rajon Rondo if the bidding for him gets beyond a certain threshold that is lower than we might imagine, given the Kings’ recent transaction history.
Rondo, like many other NBA free agents this summer, will be looking for a lucrative long-term contract while taking advantage of the salary cap bump this year. The veteran point guard may not be one of the most attractive players on the free-agent market, but there’s no doubt he’ll have offers once free agency gets underway on July 1.
Along with potentially letting Rondo walk in free agency, the Kings could consider trading their face of the franchise in star center DeMarcus Cousins. Although there have been reports that Sacramento has no interest in moving their All-Star center, the team may receive trade offers they simply can’t ignore.
There could be drastic changes on the horizon for Sacramento as they continue to try to right the ship.
