Rockets GM Daryl Morey thinks NBA free agency should start before the draft
In the last few years, free agency has become the epicenter for movement around the league with many notable names finding new homes in the NBA.
However, it is something that could see a bit of shift in how things are operated and the scheduling of the entire process. According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN on a recent episode of the Woj Pod, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has voiced that he believes that free agency should take place prior to the draft. Windhorst: “Two years ago Daryl Morey and the Rockets put forth the concept of moving free agency before the draft. This guy was telling me that there wasn’t any reaction in the room, there was just silence. It sort of just didn’t get voted on. It was a pitch and that was it.â€
This would change things up a bit as it would ramp up the decision-making process around the league for players and teams. It would also force teams to draft differently given the moves they have made in free agency. It is a shakeup that could change how things are operated around the league and give more concrete structure for the players on the move having more time to adjust to their new surroundings.
Under commissioner Adam Silver, the NBA has become more progressive with its layout of the league. This could be something that they consider more greatly down the line as it’s a unique idea.
In the meantime, it is food for thought on a potential setup that could impact the NBA greatly in how the offseason is approached and conducted.
