Spurs get promising update on Victor Wembanyama
The San Antonio Spurs dodged a huge bullet after an MRI revealed that star big man Victor Wembanyama did not suffer ligament damage to his left knee, which he hyperextended during Wednesday’s game against the New York Knicks.
The Spurs are taking the precautionary approach with the 21-year-old as he didn’t travel with the team for Friday’s road game against the Indiana Pacers. He will instead receive additional treatment at Victory Capital Performance Center.
San Antonio is listing him as questionable for Saturday’s home game against the Portland Trail Blazers. The team will likely take a precautionary approach to avoid any setbacks or additional health issues.
The injury occurred early in the fourth quarter as he attempted to get a rebound near the rim away from Karl-Anthony Towns and Jordan Clarkson. He landed on the floor and immediately grabbed his left knee, which he was able to walk off the court under his own power.
After the game, Wembanyama didn’t voice any concern about his knee.
“It was just a hyperextension, so it should be minimal,” Wembanyama said via ESPN. “I was confident. I was this close to coming back in the game. [They] had to hold me back.”
The Spurs will closely monitor the situation, as Wembanyama is a key piece to their long-term future. San Antonio has made significant strides this season, currently holding the second-best record in the Western Conference at 24-9.
