Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama to play for France in 2024 Olympics

Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama has yet to play in the NBA, and he’s already considered a star player. Although, it’s been a while since Wembanyama has made the headlines. The last time being during the NBA Summer League and his first sighting in a San Antonio Spurs uniform. However, he dropped a bombshell of sorts this week.

Following Team USA’s fourth-place finish in the FIBA World Cup, the basketball world has been in an uproar. It seems the rest of the world has caught up to the Americans once again. The next international showdown will take place next summer in Paris, with France’s biggest basketball superstar ready to represent his country at the 2024 Olympics via ESPN.

“Performing well at the Olympics would be a great story,” Wembanyama told French media. “I’ll be present at the Olympics, and there’s no other goal than gold.”

Along with Wembanyama, a lot of the world’s best international players will likely be playing as well, from Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic. The gold medal is wide open for the first time in quite some time.

Even though NBA superstars like LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry intend to play for Team USA, the gold isn’t a lock for the Americans, which will make for an interesting dynamic in Paris next summer.

Wembanyama admits being not disappointed in France’s performance in the FIBA World Cup but won’t judge the team due to his absence.

“The World Cup was very disappointing,” Wembanyama said. “But I have no judgment to make as I wasn’t there.”

Although France likely won’t be the favorite, they’ll still be very much in the running at the Olympics, with a lot of top-level competition expected.
