Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama earns NBA Rookie of the Year honors

San Antonio Spurs’ promising big man Victor Wembanyama capped off his impressive first NBA season by becoming the unanimous Rookie of the Year award winner.

Wembanyama became the sixth player to earn a unanimous selection joining the likes of Ralph Sampson, David Robinson, Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

“My goals were always to help my team as best as I could and get better as the year went on,” Wembanyama said from San Antonio on TNT after the award was announced on the network’s NBA playoff pregame show via ESPN. “I knew in order to do this I had to be individually good on the court and dominant. So, it was a huge thing for me and a big thing to get. It’s always been really important and I’m glad it’s finally official.”

Wembanyama joined Robinson and Tim Duncan as the only other players to win that honor in Spurs history. He put together a highly productive rookie campaign in which he averaged 21.4 points per game. As well as that, he had 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, a league-best 3.6 blocks, and 1.2 steals.

Wembanyama’s first year was filled with historic accolades such as becoming the first rookie to notch 250 blocks since Alonzo Mourning. He also became the youngest player to achieve a 5×5 game.

Wembanyama ran away with the prestigious award after Chet Holmgren was long viewed as the only other challenger. The Spurs big man finished with 495 points followed by Holmgren at 295.

Wembanyama is the centerpiece of the Spurs’ promising future ahead.
