Warriors GM Feared Stephen Curry Was ‘Done’ For Playoffs After Knee Injury
Coming into the NBA playoffs, few believed any team in the postseason could contend with the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors in a seven-game series. The San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder were considered threats but remained underdogs and for good reason.
Apparently, once two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry went down with a knee injury after an ankle issue, Warriors general manager, Bob Myers, thought the team’s title defense had taken a major hit. Myers said the following about his state of mind after Curry’s knee injury earlier in the playoffs, via CBS Sports’ Ken Berger:
“Two series ago, with Steph,†Meyers said, “I thought he was maybe done for the postseason. A slip on a wet spot. That’s where in the position of being a front office, coach, anyone who’s not playing, the way you survive emotionally is you feel like you left it all out there.â€
Fortunately for the Warriors, Curry was able to battle through the injuries and eventually get back to his MVP form. Curry has helped lead Golden State past the resilient Thunder and has already taken a commanding 2-0 lead over LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.
Unless the Cavaliers can immediately turn things around as the NBA Finals shifts to Cleveland, the Warriors appear destined to cruise to a second straight NBA title. Golden State has manhandled the Cavaliers in this series and seem like nothing can stop them as they approach history.
As for Curry, the perennial All-Star let it be known that regardless of the outcome of the NBA Finals he will not be playing for Team USA during the Olympics in Brazil this summer. Curry will nurse his injuries while likely celebrating a second consecutive NBA title as the undisputed leader of the Warriors.
