Jadeveon Clowney Wins ESPY For Epic Hit

The hit heard ’round the world continues to reverberate for South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney.

The shockwaves from that monster hit South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney laid on Michigan running back Vincent Smith during the 2013 Outback Bowl continue to reverberate in the college football world. The hit was breathtaking in it’s brutality and without the turnover it generated, the Wolverines would’ve walked away with the win.

It was the moment he went from talented, promising and relatively unknown prospect to a mythical man-beast capable of leveling a building with nothing more than a running start. Clowney’s performance for the Gamecocks in 2012 was so great that there was speculation he may not even return this season, because his draft stock could only go down.

Tonight Clowney’s merciless Michigan takedown won the ESPY for ‘Play of the Year’. He was on-hand to accept the award in person—brevity was the order of the day in his hilariously brief acceptance speech. A man of many words he is not.

People—with the noted exception of Clemson fans, who are none too fond of the kids—took to Twitter to express their universal shock and awe…and fear…of Clowney’s monstrous athleticism. Here’s a look at the reaction:

19Self-loathing South Carolinians for Clowney!

18Well, the language was a little colorful, but it’s hard to disagree with the sentiment.

17He is pretty intimidating.

16Clowney’s speech was amazing. Some people may say it’s because he “can’t speak,” but they’re just jealous. Obviously he can speak, he just doesn’t have to.

15Yep. Can’t argue that.

14This is just kind of weird.

13That would make him the first purely defensive player in history to win the Heisman. And we’re already coming off Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel being the first freshman ever to win the award in 2012. Perhaps there’s more history to be made.

12It’s a good thing too! That hit has been on repeat for seven months.

11Not really sure what this guy is talking about.

9This is a relatively comment sentiment. There were even some in the media who have argued in favor of granted a one-time Clowney exception and allowing him to head to the NFL early. Obviously that isn’t a feasible option, but he’s definitely equipped to play at the next level already.

8Clemson fans. Obviously all this losing is getting to them.

7Negative nelly!

5From one end of the spectrum to the other! 4Ha. Oh Kanye West. May you and Mark Sanchez be the butt of Twitter jokes from now till eternity.

1Sleep with one eye open, Chandler, holding your pillow tight.

2It’ll be interesting to see how this actually plays out for UNC. Mr. Deez should probably enjoy the fantasy while he can.

3They should rename the award to “Decapitation of the Year.”
