NFL Draft: Which QBs go in Day 2?
The NFL Draft has seen the first round come and go, with three quarterbacks being taken off the board.
All three saw teams move up to acquire them, with the Chicago Bears going from third to second-overall for North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky. The Kansas City Chiefs made the biggest move of all, trading all the way from the 27th pick to the 10th in order to land Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech’s Air Raid system. Finally, the Houston Texans made their push, trading up from 25th to 12th for Deshaun Watson of the reigning college champions, the Clemson Tigers.
However, there are still a litany of quarterbacks available going into the second day of the draft. DeShone Kzier of Notre Dame and Davis Webb of Cal were two men who thought they could be of the board by this point. Instead, both are likely to hear their names in the second round, with both having strong points. Kizer was bad in 2016 but had impressive tape the year before for the Fighting Irish, while Webb is inconsistent but has a strong arm and perfect size.
It would be a shocker if either gets to the third round. Look for the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars to be a few of the teams in the early portion of the second to be on them. New York has a pair of young signal-callers in Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, but general manager Mike Maccagnon might want to add another option in that room.
Jacksonville is a very interesting case. The Jaguars have another week to decide whether or not they pick up the fifth-year option on Blake Bortles’ contract, but nothing has been figured out yet. With that in mind, the front office, which now includes Tom Coughlin, could opt to give Bortles competition. If that’s the case, Kizer or Webb would make plenty of sense here.
Later in the round, keep an eye on both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. Arizona is likely looking at the last year of Carson Palmer, and should be considering any and all options for his replacement. The Cardinals love to throw the ball deep down the field, making Kizer a great fit for Bruce Arians’ system.
Pittsburgh also has to be wondering what is coming after Ben Roethlisberger eventually retires. After considering that notion throughout the offseason, Roethlisberger is returning, but alarm bells must be ringing at headquarters. The Steelers might consider taking Nathan Peterman, who is from their backyard at the University of Pittsburgh.
Before the day is over, look for at least four quarterbacks to be taken. The darkhorse could be Josh Dobbs of Tennessee, who shows ample athletic ability and a powerful arm.
