NFL News: ‘No Chance’ Troubled QB Johnny Manziel Joins Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are in a desperate need of a backup quarterback. America’s Team suffered a major blow to their offense recently with backup Kellen Moore going down with an injury forcing the franchise to explore other options. Johnny Manziel has consistently been linked to the Cowboys over the past two years, but Jerry Jones and company don’t seem to have an interest in bringing him in for insurance behind superstar Tony Romo.
According to Cowboys vice president, Stephen Jones, Manziel doesn’t have a future with the Cowboys, via Jean-Jacques Taylor of ESPN:
“There’s no chance,” Jones said on CBS Sports Radio’s “Tiki and Tierney,” when asked if the Cowboys would consider signing Manziel. “Obviously Johnny needs to get his hands around his life. He needs to do the things that make him a good person off the field, I think, before he can ever be successful in our league.”
Manziel has been a wild card even before he was a drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014. Although Manziel showed flashes of talent with Texas A&M and had some people believing he could be a Doug Flutie or Drew Brees-like player on the next level, the former first-round draft pick has been a bust.
Along with all his off-the-field legal troubles, Manziel’s chances of returning to the NFL are becoming less and less likely. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seriously considered drafting Manziel two years ago to learn under Romo and eventually become the face of the franchise but was urged not to make the make as a result has seemingly dodged a bullet.
As for Dallas’ quarterback search, the team remains without a backup behind Romo. With the veteran struggling with injury issues last year, and as a result losing any hope of a playoff berth, having a viable backup behind Romo is essential. Nick Foles seemed like the logical choice last week, but the veteran decided to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs instead.
It’ll be interesting to see what the team does in the coming weeks with only Jameill Showers to lean on during the preseason.
