49ers ‘still plan’ on QB Jimmy Garoppolo leading San Francisco
Over the last several months, there has been some lingering noise around Jimmy Garoppolo’s long-term future with the San Francisco 49ers.
All that hit another octave earlier this month after the team elected to acquire the No.3 overall pick in this year’s draft from the Miami Dolphins. Despite all that chatter, head coach Kyle Shanahan voiced to the media that Garoppolo remains the starter in San Francisco. (H/T Pro Football Talk)

“Jimmy wasn’t totally excited about it but he handled it great like he always does,” Shanahan said. “We still plan on him leading us and getting as far as we can with him.”
Shanahan can voice what he wants to the media, but the writing is on the wall for Garoppolo. The team is making plans to have their transition plan to the next quarterback. The 29-year-old is likely playing in the final year with the franchise as the team has no significant financial commitment to him in his deal.

After this season, the 49ers could part ways with him, resulting in only a $1.4 million dead cap hit if they cut or trade him. Beyond that, there isn’t any stability for Garoppolo to lean on as the 49ers have complete control in the situation.
Meanwhile, he provides the franchise the pathway to transition to their future under center. There are reports that the team may be leaning toward taking Mac Jones at the spot after his strong showing at his draft workout.
It’s only a matter of time before Garoppolo is on his way out in San Francisco.
