Bill Belichick believes Matt Cassel is proof Patriots aren’t in trouble at QB
The New England Patriots have thrust fully into a new situation under center with star quarterback Tom Brady leaving the franchise after 20 seasons this offseason.
As a result, many questions arise concerning how the team will handle the transition to a new player at the helm of the offense. In response to that, head coach Bill Belichick voiced that he believes Matt Cassel serves as a strong example of how the team adjusted to that scenario, according to Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald.

“Cassel would be a good example,” Belichick said. “We geared everything toward what would be best for him, just like we always geared everything toward what was best for Tom to help our offense there. So I don’t really see that changing.”
That situation occurred back in the 2008 campaign after Brady suffered a torn ACL in the first game of the season. It forced Cassel into the starting job for the entire season with the Patriots just missing out on the playoffs after finishing with an 11-5 record.

Belichick garnered much confidence from that situation on how to handle what the Patriots are dealing with years later. Still, this time it’s without Brady’s pending return. That was a one-year experiment that largely worked out in their favor with an entirely different roster that doesn’t possess the offensive talent that had back in 2008.
Regardless of who New England winds up turning to under center, the team will have their chance to prove it next season.
