Broncos and Chiefs Square Off in Huge AFC West Game

The Chiefs narrowly defeated the Browns on Sunday.

The Chiefs narrowly defeated the Browns and a few other weak teams.

Finally, the Denver Broncos will meet the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. If not for a road loss suffered by the Broncos a few weeks ago at the Indianapolis Colts, both teams would be unbeaten coming into the game. Either way, the winner will assume the top spot not only in the AFC West but in the AFC. The Broncos will come into the game without their head coach, John Fox who is recovering from heart surgery in North Carolina. Jack Del Rio will assume head coaching duties in his absence. Also, Peyton Manning is a bit banged up this week as well. As usual, the Broncos are not letting word get out on what his status is for the game.

The Chiefs come into the game at 9-0. If there was ever a team that has gone about a 9-0 start quietly, this is the team. They are the fist team not only in football, but in ANY of the four major North American sports leagues to have the worst record in one year and start 9-0 the very next season. Yet, they’ve been largely under the radar because the Broncos tend to grab all the attention in this division. But the 1972 Miami Dolphins are awaiting the Chiefs to lose so they can pop open the champagne in their annual ritual of celebrating the fall of the last of the unbeatens.

The Chiefs have been beating everyone on their schedule if not impressively. New quarterback Alex Smith and new head coach Andy Reid have been just what the doctor ordered. The Chiefs have two 17-16 wins, one over the Dallas Cowboys and one over the Houston Texans, and a 23-17 win over the Cleveland Browns and a 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills. So yes, those wins may not be too impressive, but they also beat the New York Giants 31-7, the Oakland Raiders 24-7 and the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-2. So these guys are pretty good, even if they haven’t played a team as good as Denver yet. It is possible to have a weak schedule, but still be really good. I guess we will find out if that is Kansas City this week.

So what about the game this week?

Bovada has the odds on this week’s games involving the AFC West teams:

Kansas City at Denver– The Chiefs are +8  EVEN and the Broncos -8 Even ATS. O/u is 49.5 with both over and under -110. We like the Chiefs to beat the spread. They haven’t lost one all year and certainly haven’t lost by more than a touchdown. No reason to think that will happen.

San Diego at Miami– The Chargers are -1.5 EVEN and the Dolphins are +1.5 EVEN ATS. O/U is 45.5 with both -110. We are going with Miami at home -1.5 and the under -110.
