Browns considering picking up Kareem Hunt on waivers
The Kansas City Chiefs made a surprising move this week when the team released star running back Kareem Hunt after a controversial video surfaced. Despite Hunt playing a major role in the team’s high-powered offense, the team felt they needed to make an example of the second-year back and now the Cleveland Browns might be ready to make a waiver claim on him.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Browns haven’t ruled out the notion of potentially picking the troubled back up on waivers come Monday.
The Browns won’t reveal if they’ll put in a waiver claim Monday on Willoughby, Ohio native Kareem Hunt, who was drafted by GM John Dorsey when he was with the Chiefs, a team source told Cleveland.com.
Although Hunt would be a welcome addition to this team on the rise with Baker Mayfield under center, Cleveland does have a back that has made some noise this season in Nick Chubb. However, Hunt is a Pro Bowl-caliber back and would transform their offense into a potential powerhouse in the AFC.
The problem for Cleveland will be the perception of signing a player with a Ray Rice-like incident on his record. Obviously, this is not a good look and will be come with a fair share of controversy which may be more negative attention than the team is willing to undertake at this point.
Before being released by the Chiefs, Hunt was well on his way to topping his impressive rookie campaign by having already scored more touchdowns than he did in all of last season (11) with 14. Only time will tell whether Hunt will be able to continue his career in the league or if he gets the Rice treatment due to the video surfacing.
