Browns QB Baker Mayfield focused on ‘winning right now’ rather than his contract
The Buffalo Bills recently secured its long-term future by inking star quarterback Josh Allen to a six-year extension worth $258 million. The move quickly shifts the attention over to the next crop of quarterbacks lined up for a massive payday. Cleveland Browns’ Baker Mayfield looks to be next in line as he’s inching closer to the end of his rookie contract.

With Allen locked into a massive extension, Mayfield voiced that he’s focused on helping his team. Meanwhile, he’s confident his next deal will get worked out.
“I’d be lying if [I] said otherwise,” Mayfield said following Cleveland’s orange-brown scrimmage at FirstEnergy Stadium via ESPN. “But I’m worried about winning right now. … I think the rest will take care of itself.”
Throughout the offseason, the Oklahoma product has continued to voice the desire to garner a new deal with the Browns. However, there hasn’t been any significant development on that front toward an extension.

Instead, Mayfield is heading toward playing out the fourth year of his contract with the fifth-year option for the 2022 campaign exercised. The Browns likely don’t feel any pressure to work out a new deal as he still has two years left in his contract.
Baker Mayfield also hasn’t taken the next step in his progression toward showing he’s a bonafide franchise quarterback. He’s shown flashes of promise but has yet to translate that into a breakout campaign. All that puts a make-or-break 2021 season to prove to the Browns that he’s worth inking to a franchise-record extension.
