Browns sign Myles Garrett to massive contract extension

In a surprising turn of events, star pass rusher Myles Garrett has agreed to a record-setting four-year contract extension that averages $40 million per season and includes $123.5 million in guaranteed money.

Garrett becomes the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history. The contract also reportedly includes a no-trade clause that allows him to dictate his future throughout his deal.

It’s a complete change for Garrett, as he publicly announced on Feb.3 that he wanted to play for another team to compete for a Super Bowl.

The star defensive end’s change of heart keeps the Browns’ defensive anchor, one of the league’s best defensive talents. Through his first eight seasons, he has earned six Pro Bowl selections, a Defensive Player of the Year award, four First-Team All-Pro nods, and two Second-Team All-Pro selections.

The Browns are coming off a disappointing 2024 season, during which they finished with a 3-13 record. The franchise faces major questions about its future under center, with Deshaun Watson recovering from his second Achilles tear, which could force him to miss significant time in 2025.

The Browns are also burdened with Watson’s remaining massive, fully guaranteed contract, as he still has two years left. The front office was able to restructure his deal to create $36 million in salary cap space for this offseason.

Cleveland owns the second overall pick in this year’s draft, which could see them utilize it to add another young, promising quarterback, address another position of need, or trade to further solidify the roster with additional draft picks.
