Bucs QB Tom Brady thinks NFL’s new ‘number rule is crazy’
The NFL went through another offseason with notable changes before the upcoming campaign.
One of which centers on teams allowing defensive players to use single-digit numbers. It’s a change that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady hasn’t been too happy about in any capacity.
Brady recently expressed that discontent again during an interview with the Tampa Bay Times.
“The number rule is crazy,” Brady said. “Literally, guys changed their numbers today. I’m playing two guys who had different numbers in the preseason. So, yeah, you’ve got to watch film and know who you’re studying but so do running backs. They’ve got to know who to block. So does the offensive line. So does the receivers who are adjusting their routes based on blitzes.
“So one guys has got a 6, one guy has 11, one guy has got a 9. And they change every play when you break your routes and get to your spot. It’s going to be a very challenging thing. It’s a good advantage for the defense, which that’s what it is.”
Brady’s issue lies with being able to study and prepare for opponents. The number changes allow for players on both sides of the ball to wear nearly the same group of digits on their uniforms.

There is plenty of confusion that can take place, creating more work. It’s likely why Brady has been unhappy with the new rule as it adds another layer of preparation and attention to detail.
Nonetheless, it’s a change that Brady has no control over and has to adjust to moving forward.
