Cam Newton makes controversial comments about the Panthers

Former star NFL quarterback Cam Newton stirred the pot a bit after his strong comments that the Carolina Panthers’ locker room before he was drafted was “full of losers.”

Unsurprisingly, his remarks caught traction, and he has since doubled down on that strong take. During the latest episode of the “4th and One” podcast, Newton further cemented his stance.

“When did we become so sensitive?” Newton said via ESPN. “When did we become so sensitive to really speaking what the reality is? A locker room full of losers? Aggressive, but it’s true.”

His strong remarks garnered swift reactions from others, such as former star wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., who took exception to his stance. Smith Sr. spent most of his Hall of Fame-worthy NFL career with Carolina.

He played with the Panthers for Newton’s first three seasons, during which the two served as key offensive factors. Newton’s initial comments came from him telling Colorado star wide receiver Travis Hunter that he won’t have a strong impact on winning because he is not a quarterback.

“I went into a locker room of losers. Just honest,” Newton said. “Guys didn’t know how to win; guys didn’t know how to prepare. They didn’t take themselves serious to realize we was 2-14. There was a lot of 2-14 in the mentality of those guys.”

Smith responded by posting on X stating: “53 man locker room — 1 = 52 losers. Wow… breaking news to 89.”

Newton clarified that he didn’t mean Smith or anybody directly, but meant more so it was the mindset that the team had before his arrival.
