It was not the longer-term deal the cornerback had wanted, but it keeps Harris with the Broncos for one more year. As a result, Chris Harris Jr. could negotiate a big contract when he is a free agent following this season.

Harris, who will play his ninth season in the NFL, made Denver’s roster in 2011 as an undrafted rookie. He was scheduled to enter his last year of a $42.5 million five-year deal he signed during 2015.

Harris has been to the Pro Bowl four times, won the Darrent Williams Good Guy Award twice, was given the Broncos Ed Block Courage Award and named the team’s Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2017.

Harris is the NFL’s only defensive back with more than one interception in each of the last seven seasons.

Last season Denver was 6-6 and in the hunt for postseason play. Then, Harris fractured his right leg and missed the Broncos last four games. Denver lost each of the four.

The Broncos signed two defensive back during free agency agreeing to a $33 million contract with Kareem Jackson and a $21 million contract with Bryce Callahan.

The raise the Broncos just gave Harris makes a statement that he remains the top defensive back in Denver’s secondary.
