Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh gives update on Colin Kaepernick

As Colin Kaepernick continues his push to get back into the NFL, he won’t be playing in a Los Angeles Chargers uniform under his former head coach, Jim Harbaugh.

“I love Colin, but he’s not going to be on the coaching staff, which is set for this year. And he’s not going to be playing on the roster either,” Harbaugh said after Thursday’s practice via ESPN.

Kaepernick has been one of the NFL since the 2016 season, which he hasn’t been able to land on another roster. However, it hasn’t stopped him from attempting to make a comeback, but there hasn’t been any serious traction toward him latching on with another team.

Harbaugh has a strong connection with Kaepernick, having coached him from 2011 through 2014. The two experienced tremendous success together, highlighted by a trip to the Super Bowl.

When Harbaugh joined the Chargers, he contacted Kaepernick to ask if he wanted to join his coaching staff. He had also reportedly discussed that with him during his time at Michigan.

“I have thought that for a long time. Just the respect that I have for the football mind he has and the football man that he is,” said Harbaugh when asked what made him believe Kaepernick would make a good coach. “[Late Raiders owner] Al Davis saw something in me that made him think I would be a good coach, and I see those same qualities in Colin. If it is something he chooses.”

Kaepernick’s interests clearly lie with him getting back onto the field to continue his playing career. Only time will tell if he ever receives that opportunity in the NFL again.
