Chargers will need to be blown away by trade offer for No. 5 pick

With the 2024 NFL draft just days away, the chatter around trades has only grown louder. Amid all that noise, there has been speculation about what the Los Angeles Chargers will do with the fifth overall selection. General manager Joe Hortiz said the team will need to be blown away by any trade offer.

“They have to make it attractive for us to move away from those players,” Hortiz said via ESPN. “The whole, ‘It’s a fair trade, it’s a wash’ — I don’t think that’s a trade that we’re interested in.”

The Chargers appear to be more than comfortable to stay at the fifth overall spot. However, the organization is well aware of the need to shape out the roster to return to competing for the playoffs.

Los Angeles is a top-heavy team with massive salaries committed to its best players. That, combined with overspending, led the franchise to part ways with two key talents: wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

The Chargers were able to retain edge rushers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa. However, it came at the cost of losing two key contributors. Hortiz knows the team’s need to address more spots on the roster to build a balanced group of talent.

Beyond the injuries, the Chargers haven’t been able to piece together a team that can find consistency. Trading the fifth overall pick could come into the playoffs to add more assets to the table to construct a stronger roster.

Until then, the Chargers hold a key piece that could help change the franchise’s trajectory ahead.
