Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes suffers season-ending knee injury

The Kansas City Chiefs saw their playoff chances dashed in a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, but that was overshadowed by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffering a season-ending torn ACL.

Mahomes underwent an MRI after the game that confirmed the injury that will cut his 2025 season short.

“Don’t know why this had to happen,” Mahomes stated via social media. “And not going to lie, [it] hurts. But all we can do now is [trust] in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs kingdom, for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I [will] be back stronger than ever.”

Mahomes suffered the injury with less than two minutes left in regulation after he attempted to scramble out of the pocket and was tackled by Chargers defensive end Da’Shawn Hand.

It was the manner in which Mahomes went down as his left foot planted, leading to his knee buckling in an awkward position.

Mahomes finished the game with completing 16 of 28 passes for 189 yards with an interception and a 62.9 passer rating. He had been working through a left leg issue, which may have contributed to his injury.

He finishes the season with 3,587 passing yards, 22 touchdown passes, 11 interceptions, and a 89.6 passer rating, which marked his lowest such mark since his one-game appearance in the season finale in his rookie season in 2017.

Sunday’s loss also snapped the Chiefs’ 10-year playoff streak, which was the longest by any team across the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL.
