Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes wants to be ‘ready for Week 1’

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has his eyes set on being ready to play Week 1 of the 2026 season.

Mahomes underwent surgery in mid-December to repair his ACL and LCL in his left knee, and he has been working through his rehab to put him on that trajectory.

During a Zoom call on Thursday, he said he is on track with his recovery and could be back on the practice field for training camp in the fall.

“I want to be ready for Week 1. The doctors said I could,” Mahomes said via ESPN, “but I can’t predict what happens throughout the process. That’s the goal, to play Week 1 and have no restrictions. You want to be out there healthy and give us the best chance to win. I hope to do some things in OTAs and training camp and be able to do things there.”

It is a bit of a lofty goal for Mahomes as he’s working his way back from significant injuries that typically require nine months to a year to recover fully. The Chiefs will likely take the precautionary approach given the nature of the injury.

Mahomes is the long-term future of the franchise, and the team won’t want to risk him suffering a setback or another injury that keeps him off the field longer than expected.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs could see significant changes around him next season, as star tight end Travis Kelce could retire and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy may receive a head coaching opportunity elsewhere.
