Commanders star Chase Young likely to miss season opener
The Washington Commanders are heading into the 2022 season hoping to make headway toward the playoffs.
However, that will see that journey start without star defensive end Chase Young for at least Week 1 action due to a knee injury that he suffered at the end of last season.
The latest news doesn’t come as a surprise, as head coach Ron Rivera voiced earlier this week that Young would be on the physically unable to perform list. A report also indicated that the Ohio State product would return in mid-September at the earliest.

The Commanders are taking the precautionary approach as Young has struggled with injuries throughout his brief NFL career. He suffered a torn right ACL last November, which is an injury that typically takes nine months to a year to recover fully.
Young falls well within that time frame, which further underlines the team moving him along at a comfortable pace. Washington wants to avoid a setback as it could put him out of action for a sizeable chunk of the 2022 campaign.
“It was a serious injury,” Rivera said via ESPN. “He’s doing everything he’s supposed to. He’s on time as far as where the doctors think he should be, and as he gets better and better we can update you. But right now, he’s right where he needs to be.”
Through his first two seasons, he has recorded 9.0 sacks, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and 70 total tackles in 24 career regular-season games.
