Commanders WR Terry McLaurin requests trade

Things just got that much more complicated for the Washington Commanders ahead of the start of the NFL preseason, with star wide receiver Terry McLaurin requesting to be traded.

According to John Keim of ESPN, McLaurin has asked to be sent elsewhere because the two sides haven’t been able to see eye-to-eye on a lucrative long-term contract extension.

Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin, frustrated with negotiations on a contract extension, has requested a trade, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday.

With the sides far apart, McLaurin held out for the first four days of training camp before reporting Sunday. There has been no movement toward a new deal, one source said.

With the Commanders drastically turning things around with the emergence of superstar quarterback Jayden Daniels during the 2024 campaign, the last thing Washington needs is to lose arguably the team’s best wide receiver in a trade ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

The franchise has been adamant about not wanting to trade McLaurin despite the team’s struggles to come to terms on a contract extension.

Team sources have said multiple times that the Commanders won’t trade McLaurin. It’s uncertain what interest he will draw from teams, knowing they would have to surrender a package that tempts the Commanders and then pay him more than $30 million per year.

With the start of the 2025 campaign set for Sept. 7 against the division rival New York Giants, the clock is ticking on the Commanders brass to get something figured out or risk losing one of the best wide receivers in the game in a trade.
