Cowboys hire Brian Schottenheimer to be new head coach

The Dallas Cowboys have found their next head coach in offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

He becomes the 10th head coach in franchise history as he steps into his first head coach gig of his career. Schottenheimer spoke with Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones, and vice president of player personnel Will McClay this week about the position.

The Cowboys are leaning on his strong standing with Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott as well as his relationship with the organization.

“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Jones told ESPN. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Dallas spent the last few weeks interviewing candidates such as Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and talked to Colorado head coach Deion Sanders.

Schottenheimer has been with the Cowboys since 2022, when he first joined as a consultant, working primarily with former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. After Moore departed for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, he was hired as the offensive coordinator despite Mike McCarthy holding the playcalling duties.

The Cowboys fired McCarthy after five seasons, where he held a 49-35 regular season record that included three straight 12-5 seasons. However, Dallas failed to move past the divisional round in three playoff appearances.

Schottenheimer will presumably take over those reigns that McCarhty held before his departure. He is also expected to heavily consider former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus for the vacant defensive coordinator position.

Schottenheimer will spend the next few weeks filling out his coaching staff before the offseason kicks into high gear.
