Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gives update on Dak Prescott

After the Dallas Cowboys agreed to a historic four-year, $136 million deal with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, the focus shifts back toward Dak Prescott’s unresolved contract situation.

The Pro Bowl quarterback will not be signed beyond the 2024 season. Even with that, team owner Jerry Jones has not changed his stance on the matter.

“It’ll remain like it’s been,” Jones said Wednesday via ESPN.

Jones hasn’t aired any sense of urgency in getting Prescott under a long-term deal but voiced that he’s okay with allowing it to drag out until next offseason.

Meanwhile, Prescott has stated that he desires to stay with the Cowboys beyond 2024 but is open to scenarios where he could play for another team next season.

At the same time, Jones voiced that he doesn’t believe he needs to see more in order to give his star quarterback a lofty new deal.

“You could easily say, ‘If you haven’t seen it by now, you haven’t seen it,'” he said. “I’m such a fan of Dak’s and appreciate all of the great things that we all know that is there. And I appreciate his work ethic more than anything out here. I can’t tell you how proud I am that we’ve got him this year to start this campaign.

“When you look at a situation, you’ve got also got to weigh, ‘OK, what are the consequences of the other side of the coin?’ And so Dak’s situation right now for me, from my mirror, has more to do with our situation than it does with the merits of Dak Prescott being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.”

Prescott will likely play the 2024 campaign without a new deal, leaving the door open to him heading into next offseason with the realistic scenario that he could depart in free agency.
