Cowboys owner Jerry Jones makes it clear Dak Prescott is ‘worthy of investing in’
Heading into the 2019 season, one of the underlying questions around the Dallas Cowboys has been the long-term future of quarterback Dak Prescott as he enters the final year of his contract.
In light of that, team owner Jerry Jones has voiced during an interview on the Rich Eisen Show on Monday that the Cowboys want to keep Prescott for the long haul, according to Jon Machota of Dallas Morning News.
“We’re sold on Dak and we do want to have him for the long term. We think he’s worthy of investing in for the long term. … We see real upside in Dak. You don’t have it all yet.”
In the first three years with Prescott under center, the Cowboys have had much success with him. This has seen them help lead the team to a pair of playoff appearances in the process, including two NFC East division titles and two trips to the Divisional round of the postseason.
However, the team hasn’t been in a hurry to work out a long-term deal with Prescott. The team could franchise tag him for the 2020 campaign if things went that far.
The Cowboys will likely not let things get that far with their eyes on resolving this situation as soon as possible. The only question that remains is how much Dallas will be willing to pay Prescott.
Given that several other quarterbacks in the league such as Russell Wilson, Matt Ryan, Aaron Rodgers all worked out massive deals within the last year, it may push up the asking price from Prescott. Ultimately, this should make for an interesting situation in the coming months.
