Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott not around at the start of training camp
In the last couple of weeks, things have become murky on the front between the Dallas Cowboys and star running back Ezekiel Elliott concerning his contract situation.
In fact, this has led to him spacing himself away from the team in hopes of pushing them to sign him to a new extension. Elliott has taken this another step further by deciding not to board the plane to go to training camp, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott was not on the plane to Los Angeles with the majority of Dallas Cowboys teammates and coaches Thursday for the start of training camp in California.
Although the plane ride was optional, it does show that Elliott is firm with his position as he followed it up the next day without not showing up to training camp. Team owner Jerry Jones has voiced no concern over the matter at this point. Elliott currently has two years left on his rookie deal as the team has picked up the team option for the fifth in the 2020 campaign.
The 24-year-old has proven to be one of the league’s top running backs through his first three seasons when he has been on the field. He has had some questionable actions away from the field that could be drawing some hesitation from the team.
At the same time, the Cowboys are currently dealing with pending contract situations, with both Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper and quarterback Dak Prescott set to become free agents next offseason. This has put them at the forefront of working out new respective deals.
Elliott’s contract holdout has only added more complications to the situation, but it’s hard to believe both sides won’t both eventually work things out.
