Chargers May Have Quietly Made One of the Most Interesting Moves of the Offseason
The Los Angeles Chargers added another offensive piece to the puzzle this offseason by signing tight end David Njoku to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million.
Njoku hit the open market on Feb. 10 after the Cleveland Browns voided his contract. He had spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Browns, where he ranks second in team history in touchdown receptions (34) and catches (384) for a tight end, sitting behind Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome.
The 29-year-old is coming off posting 33 catches on 48 targets for 293 receiving yards and four touchdowns. His production has dropped over the last two seasons, but that is due to missing 11 games due to injury.
He’s only a few seasons removed from his Pro Bowl campaign in 2023, where he posted career-best numbers with 81 receptions for 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He’s recorded four or more touchdowns seven times, along with 500 or more receiving yards on four occasions.
Njoku is heading into a fresh situation where he could quickly become a prominent piece in the Chargers’ offensive identity. He adds more depth to their tight end room that already features Oronde Gadsden, who recorded 49 receptions for 664 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his rookie campaign last season.

Njoku should be a huge factor in the offense as new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel will utilize their tight ends.
The Chargers have spent much of the offseason retooling their offense in hopes of taking a significant step forward in 2026.
