Dexter Lawrence’s Trade Request Shakes Giants

After seven NFL seasons with the New York Giants, star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence has requested a trade.

The previous two offseasons have featured the Giants and Lawrence struggling to work out a new long-term deal, but it has shifted toward the 28-year-old publicly demanding a change of scenery.

Lawrence has two years left on his four-year, $87.5 million rookie extension that pays him north of $20 million in 2026. He has been a staple on the Giants’ defensive front, earning two Second Team All-Pro nods and three Pro Bowl selections.

Before this latest development, new head coach Jim Harbaugh, in February, voiced a strong desire to keep Lawrence as a focal point of the team’s defensive identity.

“How important is he? Really important,” Harbaugh said via ESPN. “He’s super, super important. He’s a cornerstone football player — not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. He’s right in the middle. He’s a very big stone, and he’s a very active, athletic one.”

Although Lawrence is coming off a subpar 2025 season that saw him record just half a sack and eight quarterback hits, his career track record speaks for itself as he’s a proven commodity.

The Giants will first do what they can to convince Lawrence to stay and be part of the franchise shift, with Harbaugh leading the charge. If that isn’t possible, there won’t be a shortage of teams looking to acquire his services this offseason.

Time will tell if Lawrence’s NFL future will still be in a Giants uniform.
