Dolphins QB battle between Josh Rosen, Ryan Fitzpatrick could last for some time
The Miami Dolphins brought more attention to their quarterback situation with the addition of Josh Rosen during this year’s draft.
This has shifted the attention toward competition for the starting job over the offseason. According to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN, Ryan Fitzpatrick currently holds down the starting job at this moment in training camp.
This is a battle that likely will last deep into the summer, but early signs indicate Rosen will need his talent and upside to rise above Fitzpatrick’s experience and command.
Fitzpatrick ran the starting offense and manned that role throughout practice. He looked in control and showed consistent accuracy, particularly in the short and intermediate areas of the field.
Fitzpatrick has had a head start over Rosen as he has had more time to acclimate to the offensive system in place. But Rosen is clearly the quarterback that they want to give a try to see if he can be the long-term answer under center.
For the time being, he will have to compete in the offseason for the starting job that could extend through the bulk of the offseason and possibly into the regular season.
This is a prime opportunity for Rosen to make his stake to the claim as being the franchise cornerstone player in Miami. These next several months will be a chance for him to build a rapport with his new teammates.
At the same time, there doesn’t appear to be any rush to get him under center as the starter. It may only be a matter of time.
