Dolphins star Tua Tagovailoa admits he considered retirement

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa experienced a frightening 2022 season that prematurely ended due to suffering three concussions.

The serious health concerns led to legitimate questions regarding retirement after three seasons. Tagovailoa has acknowledged that he considered stepping away from the game.

“I considered it for a time, having sat down with my family, having sat down with my wife and having those kind of conversations,” Tagovailoa said via ESPN. “But it would be really hard for me to walk away from this game with how old I am, with my son.

“I always dreamed of playing as long as I could to where my son knew exactly what he was watching, that he’s watching his dad. It’s my health, it’s my body, and I feel like this is what’s best for me and my family.”

The 25-year-old may still have a strong desire to continue playing, but his health remains a lingering concern. If he were to suffer another concussion, his playing future will put into jeopardy yet again.

The large number of concussions suffered already should draw legitimate doubt from the Dolphins that he can maintain a lengthy NFL career. Beyond that, the overall health risk he is taking by continuing to play is something that will be monitored closely.

Tagovailoa is still under his rookie contract, where he is entering the fourth year and has the fifth year worth $23.1 million already picked up. All that leads up to what will be a crucial 2023 campaign, where all eyes will be on him.
